Nevertheless, not even the extreme dedication demonstrated by Doctors Trese and Capone, who frequently travel to Italy in order to conduct the necessary post operative examinations of the newborns, is sufficient enough to guarantee adequate treatment for all the Italian children stricken with ROP. For each newborn that completes their “voyage of hope” to Beaumont Hospital, many others are forced to live with an illness that may have quite possibly been adequately cured.
After so many years since the arrival of the first Italian newborn from Italy, the time has come to make an important qualitative leap in the program of assistance furnished to the Italian newborns suffering from ROP.
The next step consists in transferring the technique currently implemented by Doctors Trese and Capone in Italy. So that this may happen it is necessary for the Italian doctors to travel to William Beaumont Hospital for periods varying from three to six months in order to learn the techniques utilized by the American doctors and then successfully apply them in Italy.
This is possible insofar as Dr. Trese and Dr. Capone have agreed to accept Italian specialists interested in learning their techniques at Beaumont Hospital.
